5 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Momos

If you take few steps out of the house you will see a person standing besides a steamer and a group of people surrounding him. You would be amazed to so many people standing in such a tight spot. And if you try to take a good look at what the person is selling? I am most certain that you will find out that the person is selling momos. This scenario can be seen in every nook and corner of our country.

Momos has taken the junk food industry by storm. The main reason for it’s popularity is that they are easily available, delicious and really cheap-12 pieces for just 50 bucks. Who would resist such a value for money offer. Some people have developed addiction to momos.

All the junk foods are bad But there are incident reported that some people who consume momos on regular bases for a short span two years have developed intestine alignment problems and stomach cancer. It’s a even higher mortality rate than alcohol and drugs.

Reasons to avoid momos

1. Presence of adulterates

To enhance the flavour of momos, momos is laced with mono sodium glutamate, sold under the brand name Ajinomoto. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Research Institute concluded after a study in 2007 that Ajinomoto causes stomach cancer. The WHO declared it unsafe in 2004 Ajinomoto cause serious diseases like Cancer. The salt induces the pancreases to excrete extra drops of insulin which creates imbalance in the  body and promote people to overeat as it triggers hunger. Beside memory loss, regular consumption over the period of 2 year causes stomach cancer.

2. Harmful effects of maida

During processing of Maida from wheat, endosperm of the wheat is removed from the germ (wheat germ) and the bran (wheat bran), which is very crucial for digestion. Because of high Glycemic index (GI) of Maida, it spikes up your sugar levels. As glucose loiters into your blood, it gets attached to proteins, which is called Glycation which cause inflammation in the body and leads to many diseases like Arthritis, Cataract, heart diseases and the list goes on.

3. Processed chilly in chutney


Chutney momo Red chillies are good for your health but over consumption of spicy food is believed to cause bleeding haemorrhoids. Processed chillies are used which have adverse effect on health.

4. Substandard raw material

Quest for profit maximisation by the vendors or the need to make street foods affordable for the consumers make some vendors patronise cheap and unsafe ingredients that may be detrimental to the health of the consumers.

To give chutney red colour coloring agent is used.A 2009 paper published in “Prescrire International” noted that a meta-analysis of 15 double-blind clinical trials found that artificial food coloring increased hyperactive behaviour in already hyperactive children. The paper concluded that it is best for children to avoid artificial food colours.
